First and Foremost it's important to say NOT ALL BULLDOGS HAVE HEALTH PROBLEMS. It is true that some Bulldogs, just as with any breed, do have health problems. It's important to research where your puppy is coming from and find a good, reputable breeder. Not all veterinarians are knowledgeable about treating Bulldogs and it is best to use a vet who has experience with the Bulldog breed. Some common Bulldog ailments are listed below. BREATHING PROBLEMS: Tracheal Restriction: Small airway causing breathing problems. Stenotic Nares: The nasal opening is pinched or partially closed rather than wide open. Elongated Soft Palate: The soft palate is the flap located at the back of the throat. If the palate is too long it blocks the airway making it difficult to breath. Surgery can be done. SKIN PROBLEMS: Demodex: Also known as Red Mange. It is an immune deficiency to hair follicle mites. All dogs have these mites but most are not effected by them. This condition is hereditary and is passed from parents to puppies. EYE PROBLEMS: Entropian: This is the rolling in of the eyelids causing the eyelashes to rub the eyeball. Ectropian: This is the rolling out of the eyelid leaving the eye exposed to foreign material. Cherry Eye: Protrusion of the gland in the inner corner of the eye. All the above conditions can be repaired with surgery. SKELETAL DISORDERS: Luxating Patella: This is a loosening of the knee joint and is potentially crippling. Surgery can be very expensive. Hip Dysplaysia: A structural deformity of the hip joint and can also be crippling. This can also involve expensive surgery. Spina Bifida: A developmental abnormality where some vertebra are malformed exposing the spinal cord.
Once again its important to know these conditions are not rampant in the Bulldog breed and its always best to deal with a reputable breeder. You should be aware of things that could happen and educate yourself by reading and asking questions. Bulldogs do have some special needs and require special care. It is very important to know that Bulldogs are not meant to be outside, backyard dogs. They cannot take extreme heat or cold. Heat stroke can happen quickly and suddenly with a Bulldog. If you are looking for a lovable, loyal companion who craves your love and attention a Bulldog could be just for you. |
